The group company Smoltek Hydrogen has initiated a collaboration with a company whose extensive build-up of production capacity will make them one of Europe’s largest manufacturers of electrolyzers.
Smoltek HydroÂgen has received an order from the manÂuÂfacÂturÂer for a numÂber of test samÂples of cell mateÂrÂiÂal for elecÂtrolyzÂers. The order for the evalÂuÂaÂtion was received from one of Europe’s leadÂing elecÂtrolyzÂer manÂuÂfacÂturÂers, which in the comÂing years will invest in extenÂsive expanÂsion of its proÂducÂtion capacÂiÂty to mass proÂduce electrolyzers.
With this colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion, we are now buildÂing demonÂstraÂtors togethÂer with one of the leadÂing playÂers in the elecÂtrolyzÂer marÂket. This marÂket is the preÂreqÂuiÂsite behind the growth of fosÂsil-free hydroÂgen, and is it now growÂing at record speed.1
says ElliÂnor EhrnÂberg, PresÂiÂdent of Smoltek Hydrogen
The elecÂtrolyzÂer manÂuÂfacÂturÂer has ordered mateÂrÂiÂal samÂples of Smoltek’s cell mateÂrÂiÂal for elecÂtrolyzÂers, which they will inteÂgrate with their own techÂnolÂoÂgy into comÂplete elecÂtrolyzÂer cells. When the manÂuÂfacÂturÂer has carÂried out comÂpreÂhenÂsive tests of the elecÂtrolyzÂer cells, the results will be jointÂly evaluated.
The mateÂrÂiÂal samÂples conÂsist of porous titaÂniÂum that will be coatÂed with Smoltek’s carÂbon nanofibers and a corÂroÂsion proÂtecÂtion. This enables the elecÂtrolyzÂer manÂuÂfacÂturÂer to evalÂuÂate how the cell mateÂrÂiÂal perÂforms in comÂbiÂnaÂtion with the manufacturer’s othÂer mateÂrÂiÂal choicÂes and design. Smoltek’s mateÂrÂiÂal is being develÂoped to increase the curÂrent denÂsiÂty, which is expectÂed to greatÂly reduce the size and thus the cost of an elecÂtrolyzÂer. In parÂalÂlel, the amount of (rare and extremeÂly expenÂsive) iridÂiÂum is also reduced by at least 80%.
BackÂground for the colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion
The elecÂtrolyzÂer manÂuÂfacÂturÂer and Smoltek HydroÂgen have agreed to conÂduct a project togethÂer where mateÂrÂiÂal from both parÂties are built togethÂer into comÂplete elecÂtrolyzÂer cells in labÂoÂraÂtoÂry size, so-called test cells. The manÂuÂfacÂturÂer will then run these test cells accordÂing to preÂdeÂterÂmined proÂtoÂcols. First, the manÂuÂfacÂturÂer will meaÂsure the cell’s perÂforÂmance, and then speÂcifÂic test methÂods will be used to proÂvide an indiÂcaÂtion of the cell’s lifesÂpan. The results of these meaÂsureÂments will be shared with Smoltek, which will result in large time savÂings as well as cost savÂings of sevÂerÂal hunÂdred thouÂsand SEK relatÂed to the valÂiÂdaÂtion of the technology.
HowÂevÂer, the most imporÂtant thing about this colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion is that we will learn from each othÂer. By workÂing side by side with elecÂtrolyzÂer manÂuÂfacÂturÂers, we help driÂve the develÂopÂment of the next genÂerÂaÂtion of elecÂtrolyzÂers forÂward. This is done with the goal to make the elecÂtrolyzÂers much smallÂer and cheapÂer to manufacture.
