Smoltek Hydrogen has made a significant technological breakthrough. The R&D team has successfully grown carbon nanofibers (CNFs) over an A4-sized area, marking the first time such a large CNF-covered material sample has been fabricated. This breakthrough is a crucial step towards industrial scalability of carbon nanofiber coating, which is a key step in developing the porous transport electrode for PEM electrolyzers and similar solutions for fuel cells being developed by Smoltek Hydrogen.
We are the first in the world to achieve this. The accomÂplishÂment is a sigÂnifÂiÂcant mileÂstone for us, and very valuÂable as a proof to cusÂtomers that our techÂnolÂoÂgy is scalÂable. This also means that we now can proÂduce small A4-sized test series of the porous transÂport elecÂtrode, which cusÂtomers can use when develÂopÂing next genÂerÂaÂtion of PEM electrolyzers.
ElliÂnor EhrnÂberg, PresÂiÂdent of Smoltek Hydrogen
We are pleased to conÂfirm that we can now grow carÂbon nanofibers (CNF) across a full A4-sized area. This mileÂstone was achieved using the same titaÂniÂum subÂstrate that will be used in our future high-volÂume proÂducÂtion line, where we plan to coat surÂfaces of at least one square meter at a time.

BackÂground to the achieveÂment of CNF in A4-size
In 2023 the founder of Smoltek, Shafiq Kabir, re-joined the comÂpaÂny to scale up techÂnoloÂgies to the sizes required in the hydroÂgen busiÂness. DurÂing the spring, Smoltek HydroÂgen upgradÂed Smoltek’s proÂpriÂetary PECVD R&D tool to grow CNF over a largÂer area. The improveÂments include a largÂer heater, a new top elecÂtrode, and a modÂiÂfied growth process. As a result, the R&D‑team sucÂcessÂfulÂly expandÂed the plasÂma size from a 6‑inch diamÂeÂter to an A4 size, tripling the covÂerÂage area and achievÂing staÂble plasÂma across the entire A4 surface.
By expandÂing our R&D tool’s capaÂbilÂiÂties, we gain valuÂable knowlÂedge that will preÂpare and accelÂerÂate the transÂfer of our growth recipes, from labÂoÂraÂtoÂry techÂnolÂoÂgy in the R&D tool to indusÂtriÂal appliÂcaÂtions. AchievÂing A4-sized carÂbon nanofiber growth is an essenÂtial mileÂstone towards develÂopÂing a scalÂable indusÂtriÂal process.
